Male and Female Sloth Identification

Hi, I’m new here to Tumblr, and I’ve starting up a sloth blog as well. You received the question if anyone knew a way to identify male from female sloths. Well, in the particular three-toed sloth species of ‘pale-throated’ sloths, the males are identified by a bright yellow or orange patch on their backs; the colors of the patch are separated by a thick black line. I’m going to try to attach a picture to depict the markings.

My granddaughter and I saw this sloth on the ground when we visited Costa Rica in March of this year (2014).  He had climbed down from a tree and was crawling on the ground and over the curb and over the road to the restaurant we went to for lunch.  We got some really cool video of him crawling around.

In response to your query on baby sloth gender (I can't comment on Tumblr for some reason, so I'm using the question comments), a sloth male's penis is small and inconspicuous, making it hard to identify from females. I'm no sloth expert myself, but I recommend comparing an identified-female's genitalia to the new sloth's. Congratulations for the new sloth! ~ The Sloths Cometh

Thank you!
